How we make money

We earn from paid subscriptions and from affiliate commissions on some links. Neither changes a grade, because grades are arithmetic run by code against a published formula.

Affiliate links

Some pages carry links to products and services. Where we would earn a commission if you buy, the link is labelled Affiliate link on the page itself, and it carries the rel="sponsored nofollow" attribute that search engines require on paid links. You pay nothing extra either way.

We label these in the open for the same reason the rest of this site exists. It would be a poor look for a service about buried fine print to bury its own.

What money does not buy

A company cannot pay to change its grade, remove a clause from its read, or be left out of the index. This is not a policy we ask you to take on trust — it is a structural fact about how the site is built. A grade is the sum of clause weights multiplied by severity, capped at 100, computed in our code rather than decided by a person or a model. The entire formula, including every weight, is published on the methodology page.

If a company we have an affiliate relationship with has terrible terms, its page says so. You can check any grade against the formula yourself, and every clause we describe quotes the source wording and names the section it came from.

Subscriptions

Reading a document is free and always will be. The paid plan covers unlimited document the pricing page.

Sponsored placements

Where a placement is paid for directly rather than by commission, it is labelled Sponsored. Sponsors do not get to see, review, or influence any analysis before it is published, and they cannot buy placement on a specific company's page.
